During this tour, you will see the Old Town Center, The Parliament, The Cathedral, the harbor, Hofdi house, the summit site of 1986 and Harpa, which is one of Reykjavik’s greatest and most distinguished landmarks. It is a cultural and social center in the heart of the city, where it poses majestically by the harbor.

Next, visit The National Museum of Iceland. Their permanent exhibition, Making of a Nation, is intended to provide insight into the history of the Icelandic nation from the Settlement to the present day. The exhibition includes about 2,000 objects, dating from the Settlement Age to the present.

Continue the tour with the Hallgrímskirkja church. This is Reykjavík’s most popular and famous landmark, where visitors can experience a gorgeous overview of the whole city from the top. Created by Guðjón Samuel in 1937, the amazing architecture of the structure was inspired by the shapes that lava settles in after cooling into basalt rock. The construction of this church took over 50 years and was finally completed in 1986.

In the afternoon, board a rib boat and embark on a whale watching excursion. In just few mere minutes, the harbor will be left behind and you will be surrounded by the open ocean searching for one of the biggest animals on the planet, the whale. If you’re quiet, whales often surface within few meters from the boat, so you can see them up-close. This is a great adventure that will surely make your experience to Iceland an unforgettable one.

Next, have lunch at the Fridheimar greenhouses. The greenhouse farmers at Fridheimar are able to grow tomatoes all year round using geothermal and green energy. You will have the opportunity to learn about the tradition of thermal greenhouses and the methods used by the local farmers to grow their tasty and healthy produce. Experience the diversity and freshness of Icelandic food and ingredients!

It’s time to visit Geyser territory! Explore the geothermal pools around Geyser and see Strokkur erupt every few minutes. This is one of the most mesmerizing wonders of Iceland and phenomenal experiences to see.

Now proceed to Gullfoss waterfall. The glacier river Hvita, feeds Gullfoss with milky green colored water from the glacier Langjokull, the second biggest glacier in  Europe. Gullfoss is more than just a famous, beautiful tourist attraction. These falls have a very long and interesting history, that helped to shape Iceland to this day. In the early 20th century, the waterfall was leased by the farmer who owned it, to a man who wished to harness the waterfall’s power to produce electricity. The daughter of the farmer however, Sigriður Tómasdóttir, was against this idea and sought to have the contract voided. Using her own savings, she hired a lawyer and brought the case to trial, which lasted several years. Sigriður’s would often have to travel to Reykjavik on barefoot to participate in the trail, she even threatened to throw herself into the waterfall if any construction began. Eventually, the contract was disposed due to the lack of rental fee payments, but Sigriður’s passion for the falls did not go unnoticed. This struggle brought people´s attention the importance of preserving nature and therefore she is often called Iceland´s first environmentalist.

Continue on for a private visit to a horse farm. Meet the local farmers who will show you the Icelandic horses and how they are trained. The Icelandic horse is a “five-gaited” breed, known for its sure-footedness and ability to cross rough terrain. As well as the typical gaits, the breed is noted for its ability to perform two additional gaits; the tolt and pace (sometimes called the flying pace). It is used in pacing races and is fast and smooth, with some horses able to reach up to 30 miles per hour (48 km/h). Afterwards, go for a private horseback ride around the country side.

The farmers will welcome you into their beautiful home to enjoy a delicious Icelandic meal made by the local family. Sit around the table together and exchange fun stories and learn about Icelandic legends. This is an experience that you are surely to never forget.

Day 5

Details for Today

South Iceland:

  • Drive through Thorsmork in an SUV
  • Embark on a private mountain biking excursion

Accommodation: Hotel Ranga

Meals: B, L

Start the day by hopping into a super truck/SUV!

This ride will bring you through Thorsmork, one of the shiniest pearls in the string of beautiful areas of the country. Surrounded by rugged and beautiful mountains, glaciers and glacial rivers, many have attempted to describe the charm of this area, but the words are hard to find.

Quite a few brooks and rivers have to be crossed to get there and no one should attempt the trip without the company of an experienced guide since the glacial rivers are very unpredictable. An innocent stream can change in a matter of hours into a thunderous torrent. Our skilled drivers are very experienced in these driving conditions and will take you safely across any river.

On the way, embark on a private mountain biking journey in this area. The way is safe and suits all levels. Be ready to define freedom all over again as you bike through the amazing area. You will be provided with necessary gear, mountain bikes, helmets etc.

Take a break with a barbecue lunch!

In Thorsmork, you will see multitude of small gullies and valleys, clad with low birch-trees that create seemingly endless possibilities for the nature lover. You will find more than 170 species of plants, moss and lichen in this lush area, which was a fjord some 12,000 years ago.

From here, head back towards your accommodation.

  • Visit Black Sand Beach
  • Explore the Volcano Eyjafjallajokull, which erupted in 2010

On this drive, you will have the chance to stop at Black Sand Beach, one of the world’s strangest, most interesting beaches.
